Govt. Ranbir College, Sangrur is one of the prominent and big colleges in Punjab. The College has won special laurels in academics, sports and cultural activities. The institution has produced very great personalities such as scholars, thinkers, teachers, doctors, engineers, good administrators, scientists, writers, brave soldiers, international players, political leaders and great artists are the product of this college.

Govt. Ranbir College Sangrur was established in 1939 as Inter College with the courtesy of the Late Maharaja Ranbir Singh of Jind on the occasion of his golden jubilee. In 1943, the college became Degree College. Maharaja Ranbir Singh was not only an able administrator but also an intellectual person and a lover of education. Therefore, he had a special interest in the development of academic institutions. A college house situated in front of Sh. Kali Devi Temple outside Patiala Gate was exclusively demarcated for the residence of the Principal. The college has been providing education to the students of the region for a very long time and this crusade for higher education still continues.

In 1962, the Govt. of Punjab established Punjabi University Patiala for the decentralization of academic powers and the promotion of regional languages and culture. In 1963, the local Ranbir College of Girls was merged into a college & the college became a co-educational college. In 1970, the college was taken out of the jurisdiction of Punjab University Chandigarh and included in the jurisdiction of Punjabi University, Patiala.

Spreading over 26. 42 acres of lush green campus, the college caters to the needs of urban, semi-urban and rural students of Sangrur and adjoining cities, towns and villages with a total enrolment of 3439 in 2023-24 with 1792 boys and 1647 girls. The college stands tall with its rich legacy in academics, sports and cultural activities. College magazine is also named The Ranbir after the name of the founder of this institution.

The College is situated on the Sangrur Patiala Road outside the city. There are vast playgrounds near the entrance of the college and inside the college, there are beautiful green lawns. The royal building architect of the college shows that this is an old educational institution in the Sangrur district. Since 1984, bank service has also been available with the State Bank of Patiala Extension Counter for the facilities of the students and staff.

The college has also won laurels in academics, Sports and Cultural activities. The college has one unit of NCC for girls, four units of NSS for boys and girls, Red Ribbon Club, Career Counseling, Placement and Skill Development Cell, Red Cross Society, Legal Literacy Club, Social Welfare Committee, Human Rights Committee, SES-REC, SWEEP, ELC and Voter Awareness Forum, Best out of Waste Society, Road Safety Committee, Buddy groups etc. Through these activities, the students are provided with updated knowledge for their professional advancement and welfare. Apart from this bus passes are also provided to the students by PRTC. Financial support to deserving and needy students is also given by philanthropists and government schemes.

The college has undergraduate courses in Science, Commerce and Arts faculty and postgraduate in Political Science, Punjabi & English and B.A. Honours in the subject of Philosophy and Economics. Computer education is available in the compulsory subjects of commerce.

The college also runs BCA, BBA, PGDCA, and Hospitality Diploma in Food Production courses under H.E.I.S. besides HEIS, the college is also running certificate courses under Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala.
